Health experts are urging Pennsylvanians to exercise caution outdoors as the lone star tick continues to expand its footprint across the Commonwealth, bringing with it the threat of unusual illnesses. Easily identified by a distinct single white spot on the back of adult females, this specific tick species has become increasingly prevalent throughout Pennsylvania over the past several years, establishing a strong presence in wooded, brushy, and tall grassy areas.

While the lone star tick is a known vector for dangerous bacterial infections such as ehrlichiosis and tularemia, medical professionals are particularly concerned about its connection to a rare condition called alpha-gal syndrome. This unique syndrome can develop after a person is bitten by the tick, transmitting a sugar molecule that can trigger a severe, life-altering allergy to red meat and other mammal-derived products like dairy. Health officials advise residents to utilize tick repellents, wear protective clothing, and perform thorough tick checks after spending time in potential habitats.
