An evacuation order for residents in Dimock Township was lifted Saturday night after a standard kitchen fire escalated into a high-stakes emergency involving explosives. Fire crews from the Elk Lake Fire Company were dispatched to a residence on State Route 3001 around noon on Saturday, finding heavy flames already venting from the windows and doors. However, the operation took a dangerous turn when the homeowner informed Fire Chief Brandon Hunsinger that there was dynamite stored in the basement.

Following the disclosure, Chief Hunsinger immediately pulled all firefighters from the structure and transitioned to a defensive, long-range firefighting mode. Authorities established a half-mile evacuation zone in both directions, directing residents to the Elk Lake Community Center and Elk Lake School for safety. State Route 3001 was closed for several hours between Elk Lake Four Corners and Elk Lake School Road while the Pennsylvania State Police bomb squad was called in to secure the explosives.

By Saturday evening, the bomb squad had cleared the scene and verified the threat was mitigated, allowing the evacuation orders to be lifted and the roadway to reopen. While the home sustained significant damage, no injuries were reported to the occupants or first responders. The exact cause of the initial kitchen fire remains under investigation.
