AVOCA, Pa. — Republican Lackawanna County Commissioner Chris Chermak, who serves as the chairman of the Bi-County Airport Board, formally announced Thursday that he is taking a temporary leave of absence from his board leadership role until a new executive director is hired.

Chermak stated that he originally disclosed his decision during an executive session of the Airport Board prior to Thursday’s regular public meeting, but he chose to wait until later in the day to make the announcement public.

The decision to step aside temporarily comes amid a potential conflict of interest regarding the airport's ongoing leadership search. Chermak revealed that on June 12, he was notified by a representative from ADK Consulting and Executive Search—the firm hired to find the facility's next leader—that he remains under active consideration as a candidate for the permanent executive director position.
