Firefighters in Peckville had to battle both a roaring blaze and severe weather after a direct lightning strike ignited a fire at a local school Thursday evening.
Emergency crews were dispatched to the Abington Christian Academy in the 500 block of Keystone Avenue around 8:30 p.m. Arriving units faced intense conditions as they worked to contain the flames sparked by the storm. Fortunately, no one was inside the building when the fire broke out, and authorities reported no injuries. The damage was successfully contained to the main academy building, leaving surrounding properties unscathed.
In a bittersweet twist, a social media post from the school confirmed that Thursday had just marked the final day of classes for the academic year. The severe weather and emergency response knocked out power to the surrounding neighborhood for several hours, but utility crews managed to fully restore electricity by 11:30 p.m.
