The Republican Party of Luzerne County has officially launched a referendum effort to repeal the county's newly adopted non-discrimination ordinance. Led by organizers, including former county controller Walter Griffith, the effort aims to bypass the county council and put the choice directly into the hands of voters on a future election ballot.

The move comes after seven Democrats on council voted to pass the fiercely debated ordinance on June 9, while one Democrat and three Republicans voted against it.

Party officials want to file the application for a referendum petition on Thursday. That initial step in the process requires the signatures of 100 or more petitioners. Signatures are being collected this week at the county Republican headquarters, located at 1950 Wyoming Avenue in Exeter.
