Lackawanna County Court has sentenced a Carbon County man to five years of probation for setting fire to the Scranton home of the man accused of killing his boss.

Barton James MacConnell, of Carbon County, appeared before Judge Andy Jarbola, who imposed the sentence on Thursday. MacConnell pleaded guilty in August to a felony count of criminal mischief for the incident, which occurred at the Brook Street home of Michael Albert.

Judge Jarbola's sentence included a strict order that MacConnell is to have no contact with the victim of the arson, Michael Albert.

The fire was an act of retribution, as Albert had been accused of hitting and killing MacConnell's boss, Mark Boyle, with a dump truck in Schuylkill County in 2023.

By pleading guilty to criminal mischief, MacConnell avoided a lengthier jail sentence often associated with arson-related charges. The five-year probationary period will keep him under court supervision, but he will not serve time behind bars.
