The swimming pool at McDade Park in Scranton is closed and it's 2025 summer season is in question due to significant leaks discovered just weeks ago. County workers noticed the problem while preparing the pool for the season, finding it was losing several inches of water per hour.
The pool had just reopened last summer after years of closure and $3.1 million in renovations that included a new bathhouse, restrooms, and splash pad. But now, officials say a full repair of the tile joints on the pool’s floor is needed, based on recommendations from engineering consultants.
Commissioner Bill Gaughan called the situation “extraordinarily frustrating” and said the county is committed to fixing it the right way. Commissioner Chris Chermak says repairs will begin as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, the county solicitor plans to file a claim against a $300,000 maintenance bond posted by the project contractor, D&M Construction Unlimited. Officials also say they’re withholding the final $75,000 payment for the work.
