A portion of North Main Avenue in Scranton is closed to all traffic starting this morning, Thursday, May 14, as crews work to complete permanent repairs on a sinkhole. According to PennDOT, the closure is located between Green Ridge Street and Clearview Street and is expected to remain in place through Friday evening, depending on weather conditions.
The sinkhole was originally caused by a water main break and received a temporary fix back on April 9. This week's work aims to finalize the restoration of the roadway. To manage the traffic flow, PennDOT has stationed flaggers at several points:
- South of the closure: Flaggers are redirecting trucks and passenger vehicles toward Providence Road and the Scranton Expressway.
- North of the closure: Flaggers are directing traffic onto West Market Street.
While the immediate work zone is restricted, the surrounding area remains open to local traffic. Motorists are advised to allow for extra travel time or use alternate routes like the Expressway to bypass the detours.
