HARRISBURG, PA — Pennsylvania health officials confirmed Monday that active measles cases across the state have climbed to 497, marking a sharp continuation of a statewide surge that saw more than 300 new cases identified in August alone.
The updated total from the Pennsylvania Department of Health highlights a record month for transmissions following the state's recent confirmation of its first two measles-associated fatalities in 35 years. Public health officials report that 18% of those currently infected have required hospitalization due to severe complications from the viral disease.
Regional transmission accounts for 40 confirmed cases concentrated across Central Pennsylvania. Localized outbreaks remain highest in Snyder County, which reports 22 active cases, and Northumberland County, which has confirmed seven. Health authorities continue to urge residents to review their immunization status, noting that the two-dose Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine remains the most effective protection against infection and severe illness.
