HARRISBURG — Governor Josh Shapiro on Monday responded to growing Republican criticism over the state's prolonged budget impasse, accusing GOP leaders of stalling negotiations for political gain. The state's budget is now nearly two months late.

Speaking to reporters, Shapiro suggested that Senate Republicans are intentionally delaying a deal ahead of his expected bid for re-election next year. While he declined to specify the spending numbers or particular budget items that remain disputed, he emphasized the need for compromise to end the stalemate.

The comments come after Senate Republicans recently passed a temporary budget that would have funded the state at last year's levels, a proposal that was quickly rejected by House Democrats. The Democrats argued the temporary measure would only postpone a final agreement. The ongoing deadlock has left state funding on hold for schools, counties, and various social services.
