A 17-year-old girl was taken into custody early Sunday morning after leading Scranton police on a foot chase and violently assaulting officers while attempting to draw a concealed firearm, authorities said.
The incident unfolded around 1:51 a.m. in the 400 block of Taylor Avenue, where a special police detail assigned to the city's Hill Section encountered what officers characterized as an armed and violent confrontation. According to Scranton Police, the juvenile fled on foot when officers approached, initiating a brief chase before she was caught.
As officers attempted to take her into custody, the teenager physically resisted by kicking, spitting on, and headbutting officers. Police allege that during the struggle, she attempted to pull a concealed gun from her waistband. Officers managed to disarm her and recovered a 9mm handgun equipped with an extended magazine.
Because the suspect is a minor, her identity has not been publicly released by law enforcement. Police have not yet detailed the specific charges filed in juvenile court regarding the firearm and assault allegations.
