TUNKHANNOCK TOWNSHIP, PA — A tragic single-vehicle accident claimed the lives of two men on Monday morning after their truck veered off Interstate 80 and struck a tree.
Details of the Crash
According to Pennsylvania State Police at Fern Ridge, the accident occurred around 10:36 a.m. in the eastbound lanes near mile marker 289.6. Investigators say a passenger truck was traveling east when, for unknown reasons, it exited the roadway off the left shoulder.
The vehicle continued down a steep embankment before colliding head-on with a tree. The force of the impact was severe enough to eject both the driver and the passenger from the vehicle.
Emergency Response
First responders from several area fire departments and Pocono Mountain Regional EMS arrived on the scene to find both occupants had sustained fatal injuries. A male victim was reported to have suffered a significant head injury.
The Monroe County Coroner’s Office arrived shortly after and pronounced both men deceased at the scene.
Investigation and Identities
The identities of the two victims are currently being withheld by authorities pending the notification of their next of kin. State police noted that the investigation into what caused the truck to leave the highway remains active.
