A massive warehouse complex in Schuylkill County has been sold to the federal government for more than $119.5 million, with property records indicating the site is slated to become a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement processing facility. The property, located at 50 Rausch Creek Road in Tremont Township, was previously operated as a Big Lots distribution center before the company’s recent bankruptcy. Spanning approximately 1.3 million square feet, the facility was purchased by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which officially finalized the deed on January 29.
The acquisition has sparked immediate pushback from local residents and officials who were caught off guard by the sale. Community members held a town hall meeting last week to organize opposition, expressing concerns over the facility’s proximity to a local daycare center and the potential strain on municipal services. Local leaders also highlighted a significant fiscal impact, noting that because the federal government is now the property owner, the site will become tax-exempt. This transition is expected to cost the township, the county, and the Pine Grove Area School District roughly $1 million in annual property tax revenue.
Federal authorities have not yet released a specific timeline for when the facility will begin operations or the exact number of detainees it will house. However, reports suggest the site is part of a broader national expansion of immigration processing centers aimed at facilitating deportations. This sale follows similar federal acquisitions in nearby Berks County and other states, signaling an aggressive push by the current administration to convert large-scale industrial spaces into high-capacity detention hubs. Local representatives have reached out to federal officials for further details regarding security protocols and the long-term impact on the surrounding community.
