Penguins eliminated after heartbreaking overtime loss in Game 6

Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins saw their impressive postseason run come to a heartbreaking end Sunday night, falling 2-1 in overtime to the Toronto Marlies in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Final at Mohegan Arena at Casey Plaza. With the loss, the Penguins were officially eliminated from the 2026 Calder Cup Playoffs as Toronto captured the best-of-seven series, 4-2. The final blow was delivered by a familiar face, as former Penguin Alex Nylander snapped a low shot from the slot at 13:44 of the extra frame to end his old team's season.

The Penguins originally got off to a dream start, opening the scoring at 6:26 of the first period when Aidan McDonough hammered home a power-play goal just six seconds into the man advantage. Toronto's Easton Cowan managed to pull the Marlies even midway through the second period, setting up a dramatic, back-and-forth defensive battle through the third frame and into overtime. Penguins goaltender Sergei Murashov was spectacular in defeat, turning away 37 of 39 shots, while Toronto's Artur Akhtyamov racked up 39 saves to clinch the series. The defeat closes the book on a phenomenal year for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, who finished the regular season with 101 points before securing playoff series wins over Hershey and Springfield.
