Rockers, composers, angst arbiters Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails fame are no strangers to receiving prestigious awards for their work outside of the Industrial Rock genre.
The dynamic duo is only one Tony away from joining the esteemed EGOT club for those who have won an Emmy, GRAMMY, Oscar, and Tony Award -- but they're still racking up nominations elsewhere as fans await a Broadway adaptation of NIN's Year Zero or that elusive Broken film. Reznor and Ross have been tapped for not one but two Oscars during this year's ceremony on Sunday, April 25, for two very different sounding 2020 film scores.

With nominations for their work on the Original Scores for both Pixar's jazz-infused Soul (along with Jon Baptiste) and David Fincher's dark and brooding Mank, it's more than likely the pair will walk away with the trophy for either highly-acclaimed film. Also nominated in the category are the scores for Da 5 Bloods, Minari, and News of the World.
Speaking with Billboard, Reznor and Ross were both flattered by the double-nods. "It's surreal and humbling and incredibly flattering," Reznor said. "Another thing that kind of doesn't seem real in a year when everything starts to blur together. But we're very grateful."
"We haven't had time to fully process what's happening," Trent continued. "When we work on a project, much like when we're sitting down to write a song for NIN -- we aren't really thinking about writing something we really hope charts. We're just trying to make the best song we can write... we'll deal with the consequences of that later." Ross agrees, saying "It is incredibly flattering and humbling, but it's strange because when one's making music the way we do, like Trent mentioned, it's really just about doing what's best for the film and trying to convey the emotion that will support the storytelling."
The consequences of their very distinct but equally impressive work will now be on full display at this year's Oscars celebration, highlighting the musical malleability of this songwriting pair who make their emotional sound design seem like a simple stroll through the park.
Pixar's Soul picked up the Best Original Score trophy at the 2021 Golden Globes ceremony earlier this year, a feat Reznor was especially proud of being that he considers it "the first work of art I’ve ever made that I can show to my kids."
Their work on Mank, a film starring actor Gary Oldman that follows the story of 1940's Hollywood and the turbulent creation of a screenplay for Citizen Kane, on the other hand, shows the darkness, depth, and dramatics that fans have gravitated to since their first work together over a decade ago. Fittingly, that was for David Fincher's The Social Network for which Reznor and Ross received their very first Oscar.
