“No one can stand on that stage with me. It’s not a chance in hell that anyone can stand on that stage with me,” Jay-Z boasted last month during a Twitter Spaces conversation.
Without a doubt, Jay-Z considers himself the rap GOAT. But since he made that bold pubic statement, a few of his peers including Future and Lil Jon have either respectfully disagreed or suggested potential Verzuz opponents.
The latest rapper to weigh in on the debate is former Verzuz contender Jim Jones. Last summer, Jones and the Diplomats went head-to-head with The Lox live at Madison Square Garden.
In an interview with reporter Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson, Jones elaborated on why he believes Drake stands a chance against Jay-Z “hands down”. When asked whether he thinks Nas, Lil Wayne, or Kanye West could rival Jay-Z in a Verzuz battle, Jones surprisingly doesn’t pick any of the rappers. “…The person I would say that would probably put up the best fight, it would be Drake,” said Jones.
The Harlem-native and Dipset member went on to say that musically, Drake would be good competition for Jay-Z. Mainly because Drake has a decade worth of hits. “I know that Drake hasn’t been here for the duration that Jay has been but, Drake has put out platinum hits every time he’s put a record out,” Jones continued. “…When it comes to 20 hits, I think that Drake would be the top candidate to jump into the ring with Jay."
