HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC) – The second ever Independence Day Naturalization Ceremony took place Wednesday afternoon prior to the Yard Goats’ game against the Bowie Baysox at Dunkin Donuts Park.
60 Connecticut residents originating from 31 different countries took the oath of allegiance after completing a lengthy process to become United States citizens.
Among those speaking at the event were Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin, Senator Richard Blumenthal and Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz.
The event comes a day before Independence Day where America will celebrate 243 years of Independence.
“We are honored to once again be a part of such a patriotic and moving Naturalization Ceremony today at Dunkin’ Donuts Park,” said Yard Goats President Tim Restall. “Baseball is America’s National Pastime and what better way to welcome in 60 new US Citizens than at a Yard Goats home game. Having the opportunity to host this event as we celebrate America’s birthday with the Yard Goats today is particularly special for our team.”
United States Magistrate Judge Sarah Merriam administered the Oath of Allegiance during the ceremony.
