EAST HAMPTON, Conn. (WTIC) - Authorities are trying to determine the cause of a fire that killed more than a dozen cows at a dairy barn in East Hampton.

Temperatures were in the single digits when firefighters responded to the blaze on Flanders Road Thursday morning.

Police Chief Dennis Woessner said firefighting efforts were hampered by the fact they had to break ice on a nearby pond to get water to put out the blaze.

"The fire department had to break the ice on the pond to be able to draft water out of that pond, and the extremely cold conditions had the water freezing on the nearby road shortly after it hit it, which required us to have the town sand trucks continuously sand the road while the firefighting operations were under way."

No firefighters were injured. Two cows were rescued.
