HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut man who had used cocaine and alcohol before he crashed a stolen pickup truck that resulted in the death of a 22-year-old mother has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

WTIC-TV reports that Joseph Barreto was sentenced Tuesday. He had pleaded guilty in late May to charges including second-degree manslaughter and evading responsibility in a fatal crash.

Authorities say the 25-year-old Barreto had used cocaine and cognac the night in February 2018 when he drove 54 mph through a red light and struck a car occupied by Reny Alfonzo-Jimeno, who died. Barreto then fled on foot.

He was also sentenced to 10 years of special parole.

Loved ones described Alfonzo-Jimeno, the other of a toddler, as intelligent, a hard worker, joyful and responsible.
