(Hartford, Conn./WTIC) - Just over a year after it was closed following a violent tornado outbreak, Hamden's Sleeping Giant Park will reopen on Friday.

Governor Ned Lamont and state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Commissioner Katie Dykes in a joint statement say the park will reopen at 8:00 a.m.

Sleeping Giant was desvestated by tornardoes that blew through the area on May 15, 2018.

The park's landscape was forever changed with the loss of thousands of trees.

Much of the work was accomplished by volunteers and coordinated by the Sleeping Giant Park Association.

Officials say the restoration of the main Tower Trail was completed earlier this week.

Total cost of the restoration is pegged at about $735,000, 75-percent of which is expected to be reimbursed by FEMA.

Going forward, officials will begin work on a master plan of the devestated area and hold a series of public hearings to get input on additional changes and improvements.
