HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC) - With state lawmakers poised to start their 2019 session Wednesday, there is a renewed effort to legalize sports betting in Connecticut.
Under a proposed bill backed by a bipartisan group of lawmakers from southeastern Connecticut led by Sprague Senator Cathy Osten, in-person and online sports wagering would be legalized at Connecticut's two tribal casinos. Those 21 and over would be allowed to place bets, after the U.S. Supreme Court last spring struck down a federal law barring sports betting.
Osten notes that eight states, including nearby Rhode Island, now offer sports betting, and she believes Connecticut needs to play catch up.
Legalizing sports betting is more complicated in Connecticut than in other states because of its gaming compacts with the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan tribes.
