HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - With three deadly police shootings in Connecticut already this year, the ACLU is calling for further criminal justice reforms. The ACLU of Connecticut is pushing for lawmakers to change the legal definition of justified use of deadly force by police. Executive Director David McGuire calls the current standard "weak." He's also pressing for changes to how investigations are carried out. They are currently conducted by an out-of-jurisdiction state's attorney."One idea is to create a special prosecutor for police uses of force-- someone whose job is just to do these investigations," he said. "There's clearly enough work here in the state unfortunately."McGuire concedes transparency has improved, thanks largely to a new law requiring timely release of police body-camera footage after uses of force. But, he adds, that doesn't help in the latest shooting in Waterbury, where police don't yet have body cams.
