NEW YORK, NY_ (WTIC Radio)_ The National Weather Service confirms an EF1 tornado touched down during severe storms on Thursday afternoon.
The storms rolled across Connecticut, dumping rain and wind for much of the state and knocking out power to tens of thousands of Eversource customers. The National Weather Service on Friday confirmed that an EF1 tornado touched down in a forested area off Judd Hill Road in Bethany, CT around 3:53 p.m. on Thursday. The tornado moved about 11 miles over to North Haven where it ended around 4:03 p.m.
Its path of damage spanned about 75 to 500 yards in width. Wind speeds averaged 80 to 90 miles per hour with maximum speeds upwards of 110 miles per hour. Trees throughout the tornado's path were damaged or uprooted.
Officials say the intensity of the tornado intensified in the center of Hamden. Among many other buildings that were damaged, the roof of a two-story building was torn apart across from the Hamden Town Hall. Metal was bent and facing toward the town hall.
No injuries or fatalities were reported.
Numerous microbursts were reported in the area.
