UNCASVILLE, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - A 32-year-old male inmate is the first Department of Correction offender to test positive for COVID-19.

The inmate is incarcerated at the Corrigan-Radgowski Correctional Center in Uncasville and is in isolation, according to DOC officials.

Officials say once it was suspected the inmate had COVID-19 symptoms, he was isolated from the rest of the incarcerated population. The inmates in the same housing unit will also be isolated for two weeks.

When the positive test result was confirmed, officials say the inmate was put into a negative pressure isolation room. This room allows for air to flow into but not escape from the room, containing airborne contaminants.

DOC officials say they have conducted a review of the staff members that interacted with the inmate and have made proper notifications.

The facility will be going through a targeted deep clean in the affected unit. All inmates and correctional staff members continue to be closely monitored by the facility's healthcare staff, according to officials.

On March 21, 2020, a correctional staff member working within the building had tested positive for the virus. DOC officials say since that date, no additional staff members in the building have tested positive.
