NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - A Hamden man appeared in Superior Court Thursday for charges related to a stabbing incident in New Haven Wednesday night.

New Haven police charged Edward Dingle, 40, with stabbing a New Haven man and punching a person who tried to break up the dispute between Dingle and the victim.

According to police, around 11:42 p.m. Wednesday, the 28-year-old New Haven man walked past Dingle when a verbal dispute began between the two in front of a residence on Davenport Avenue between Stevens Street and Kossuth Street.

The dispute escalated into a physical fight in which police say Dingle stabbed the victim multiple times. Police said Dingle then fled on foot on Stevens Street.

An ambulance transported the victim to Yale New Haven Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery, police said.

Officials said he was hospitalized in stable condition as of late Thursday morning.

Police arrested Dingle and charged him with first and third degree assault, carrying a dangerous weapon and breach of peace.

The investigation is ongoing. Police ask anyone who witnessed the incident or who has security camera video of the area to contact the New Haven Police Department at 203-946-6304.
