HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Hartford has settled claims alleging sexual abuse of minors by priests totaling $50.6 million since 1953, according to information released Tuesday by the archdiocese.
The archdiocese says it has settled 142 claims. Of the $50.6 million in settlements, the archdiocese says $26.1 million was paid by insurers and $24.5 million came from church funds. It has also released the names of 48 priests it says have been "credibly accused" of sexually abusing minors.
Archbishop Leonard P. Blair says the archdiocese has hired retired Connecticut Superior Court Judge Antonio Robaina to conduct an independent review of clergy sex abuse and the church's response to it.
Blair noted that there are currently no priests working in the archdiocese who have been credibly accused of child sex abuse.
