HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - Hartford police have begun deploying officer body cameras.

Under a 30-day pilot program, 40 officers are now wearing body cameras with plans to deploy cameras department-wide and integrate the cameras with cruiser dash cameras around the end of the year.

The department has purchased 325 body cameras. The program will cost $1.8 million over five years, said officials.

Video captured by the cameras will be retained for 90 days, unless it's tagged as evidence.
