HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - Federal housing officials have agreed to provide relocation assistance to residents of the Barbour Gardens apartments in Hartford's North End, officials announced Thursday.
Residents have long complained about everything from mold, to mice, to holes in ceilings and floors at the 84-unit low-income complex. The complex scored a 9 out of 100 on a recent federal inspection.
"The living conditions are still deteriorating," said resident Betty Wadley. "My bathroom has been leaking for seven years. My ceiling is now falling. There is a bubble in the wall where the water sits. When my neighbors up over me take a shower, it showers in my shower as well."
Community organizers say they will be watching closely as the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban development helps to relocate residents and their rent subsidies to better conditions.
