FAIRFIELD, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - A swimmer in distress sent emergency responders in Fairfield to Lake Mohegan, Sunday evening around 6:47 p.m.
Witnesses said the 33-year-old man struggled to stay above water and eventually sank below the surface, according to firefighters. A police diver located him in roughly 13 feet of water.
Police say Geovanny Tapia-Zuniga was rushed to St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport, where he was pronounced dead.
A family member of the swimmer was also taken to an area hospital for treatment of incident-related stress.
The apparent drowning remains under investigation.
