POMFRET, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - Mashamoquet Brook State Park in Pomfret remains closed for swimming, according to the state's Department of Energy & Environmental Protection, or DEEP.
DEEP officials said in a water quality report Friday that the retest results of the swimming areas in the state park will come Saturday.
When testing swimming areas and beaches, DEEP officials say samples are collected weekly by DEEP staff. Those samples are then analyzed at the Department of Public Health Lab for the presence of certain indicator bacteria.
According to DEEP officials, indicator bacteria are not disease-causing pathogens. Rather, they are one of the tools used by authorities to evaluate the potential for contamination.
Mashamoquet Brook State Park is the only state park of DEEP testing that is closed for swimming.
DEEP officials say to contact the local public health agency for information on closures of local swimming areas.
