(WTIC-AM) -- Democratic State Representative Brandon McGee, Jr. today announced he is running to become the next mayor of Hartford.

McGee made the announcement a short distance from an apartment building on Barbour Street in the city's North End where he lived as a young child.

The city resident says he knows the difficulties that young people in Hartford face.

McGee says he will use his contacts in the General Assembly to help the city.

He says he will work to unite all of Hartford's neighborhoods, spur economic development, and help people re-entering society after being incarcerated.

Mayor Luke Bronin has already announced his intention to run for re-election.
