(Meriden, Conn./WTIC) - Meriden is announcing high school football will be played this fall.

The city concedes that while it and the state Department of Public Health are not advocating football this season, the game will occur nonetheless either in a club sport or private league setting.

City officials say that would lead to games being played outside the city and outside the ability to manage exposure to Covid-19.

City Manager Timothy Coon says Meriden's Department of Health and Human Service have put in requirements to mitigate exposure.

Among other things, a positive test by a player, coach or assistant would require an entire team quarantine.

Also, if the state's positivity rate surpasses 5-percent, game play would be halted.

And the games would be played under the Football Return to Action plan, as well as the State of CT Reopen Rules, with violations leading to a stoppage of play and the season canceled altogether.
