(WTIC-AM) -- On a small hill in Meriden's Walnut Grove Cemetery, Meriden Police today gathered to pay tribute to a newborn baby who died thirty-one years ago.
Newborn David Paul froze to death on a bitterly cold January second, 1988. Meriden Police gather annually on the anniversary of his death.
He was found wrapped in a blanket outside in South Meriden.
Police officers in dress uniforms stood in rows on either side of the grave.
A wreath with decorated with pinecones and a red ribbon was placed next to the baby's headstone.
Retired Meriden Police Chief Robert Kosienski says the child's story is still unknown.
"We tried so hard to find out who the mother was," Kosienski said. "We had difficulty in doing it, to this day we have not found out.
"I even had FBI people come in and try to piece this together so we could put David Paul to rest," Kosienski said.
Deputy Chief Mark Walerysiak says investigators have been unable to find the mother so far.
"The case has been very frustrating to us," Walerysiak said "It has become a cold case that we are still actively pursuing."
Meriden Police hope someone will come forward, or that new technology will allow them to identify the baby.
The baby's name was suggested by a local minister after the infant's death.
