NEW LONDON, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - A New London man suffered burn injuries from a cooking fire Tuesday evening which, according to police, is the number one cause of home fires and fire-related injuries in New London.
The New London Fire Department was dispatched to 96 Michael Road at aorund 5:30 p.m. where they found a fire in the kitchen and dining room.
Officials say fire fighters found one man with burn injuries. The man was transported to Lawrence and Memorial Hospital and later transferred to the Bridgeport Burn Center for treatement, according to fire officials.
New London Fire Marshal Vernon Skau offers the following suggestions for safe cooking:
- Be alert! If you are tired, don't use the stove.
- Stay in the kitchen if you are grilling, frying or broiling food.
- Keep anything that can catch fire away from the stovetop.
- Avoid wearing loose clothing or dangling sleeves while cooking.
