HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - Single-use plastic and paper shopping bags would be subject to a five-cent tax under a proposed bill pending in the Connecticut General Assembly.
The proposal comes from Rep. Christine Conley (D-Groton) who says revenues from the tax would be earmarked for environmental initiatives, such as public awareness efforts to encourage consumers to opt for reusable bags.
Conley says her real target is single-use plastic bags, which often cannot be easily recycled. She says she's open to compromise on the final language of the legislation.
The proposal has been referred to the legislature's Environment Committee.
