Police Report Fewer Crashes, More Violations This Year than 2018 Holiday Detail

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - This holiday weekend, Connecticut State Police report fewer speeding tickets, accidents, and DUI arrests but nearly 750 more hazardous moving violations compared to last year's holiday enforcement detail.

Based on statistics from the Connecticut State Police Department, troopers issued around 400 fewer speeding tickets, responded to around 90 fewer accidents and made 20 fewer DUI arrests compared to 2018. 


This year, from Friday, December 20 at 7:00 p.m. to the morning of December 26, state police responded to 458 accidents. Police say among the accidents, there were two fatalities. One occurred in Windham, and the other occurred in Bethany. They also say 79 of those accidents resulted in injury. There was one serious injury in Westbrook.

Police also issued 248 citations for speeding and made 35 DUI arrests.

In 2018, from 12:01 a.m. December 21, to just before midnight on December 26, state police responded to 550 traffic accidents. Among those accidents, police say there were three fatalities and 60 accidents with injury.

During that time, police issued 659 tickets for speeding and made 55 DUI arrests.

State police say this year issued 795 hazardous moving violations. The moving violations include instances of unsafe lane changes, following too closely, moving over, distracted driving, etc.

Last year, police issued 46 tickets for hazardous moving violations and 14 seatbelt tickets. 

State police also say they assisted 295 motorists and had 6,700 calls for service this year.
