(Hartford, Conn./WTIC) -  Tuition rates and fees at Connecticut's state colleges and universities will be going up next fall.

The Board of Regents has approved a 3.8-percent increase for commuter students and 3.3-percent hike for resident students.

That's an average increase of about $400 for commuters and $800 for residents.

Conversely, the board has announced tuition and fees won't be going up for community college students.

State Colleges and Universities President Mark Ojakian says they were able to achieve that thanks to a reorganization under Students First that saved nearly 11-million dollars in FY-20 and 16-million dollars in '21.

Tuition will remain flat, as well, at Charter Oak State College, whose students will see a fee reduction for a total 2.7-percent decrease.
