(Avon, Conn./WTIC) - The WTIC Holiday Store set a record for donations in this, its 30th year.
Donations totaled nearly $237,000 at the stores in Glastonbury and Avon to benefit the Salvation Army.
Major J.R. Fritsch, the area service coordinator for Greater Hartford, says a last minute surge of donors helped put them over the top.
Fritsch says the efforts of many goe a long way toward helping to fund the Salvation Army's various programs the year-round.
He says they were up 20-percent in toy donations at the Glastonbury store.
Fritsch says theirs, like many others, is a 365-day-a-year effort in funding shelters, after school and school readiness programs.
He says a strong economy may have played a part in donors digging a little deeper this year in their generosity.
