(Fairfield, Conn./WTIC) - Those with the Connecticut Audubon Society and other wildlife organizations are reporting increased sightings around the state of a certain species of owl that's not often seen.

The barred owl has been spotted over 700 times since the beginning of November, according to Audubon Society executive director Patrick Comins.

The bird has been spotted in backyards and along the sides of roads, says Comins--and with good reason: there's been a healthy population of small rodents on which to feed the last few years.

He says some of the birds are so focused on food they sometime get hit by automobiles.

Several have been reported injured.

Comins suggests calling them if a barred owl is found to be in distress, otherwise it's best to leave it be.
