Trench Wall Collapses on Newtown Turnpike, Injuring One

WESTPORT, Conn. (WTIC) – Westport Fire workers were dispatched to the Newtown Turnpike for a reported wall collapse with a victim trapped around 2:56 Friday afternoon.

EMS and Police officers also responded to find the collapse occurred at a construction site during the installation of a below grade water line.

A trench wall collapsed, trapping a worker up to their waist.  Two workers were in the trench at the time of the collapse, but the second was not caught.

The trapped worker had been extricated by colleagues on the scene prior to emergency personnel arriving.  Authorities stabilized the patient, who appeared to have sustained non-life threatening injuries.

The victim was transported to a local hospital and the immediate incident area was cordoned off.  Newtown Turnpike was also shut down in both directions during the incident as well.

At this time, there is no update on the condition of the injured person.  Fire Department units are assisting the Occupational Safety and Health Administration with the investigation of the accident.
