Videos of college students stumbling over simple political science questions such as name the three branches of the United States government provide tons of laughs on YouTube, but Philosophy professor Rob Gressis from the California State College system in Northridge wasn't out to embarrass students with his online questions - instead, he wanted to lead them through a series of simple questions that might open their eyes to the contradictions in their own assumptions about politics. The results were fascinating, so we reached out to Rob to get him on.
But in addition to discussing what we wanted to discuss, we spent a ton of time talking about the conflicting incentives that university professors face, how universities themselves engage in what appears to be false advertising about their purpose, and how the students who do the best in college might not need college at all to do well in the world.
