(Hartford, Conn./WTIC) - Ahead of a special session, the provision needed to implement the state budget has been released--and it contains one caveat.
The implementer bill on which the Senate and House will act on this week is massive--837 pages.
But it's what's contained on pages 77 and 78 that may draw particular interest.
It has to do with schools whose nicknames are those of Native American mascots.
The provision states that those cities and towns with those nicknames and mascots will lose their share of casino slot revenue.
That is, if said district has a prior agreement with a Native American tribe to use that name.
It's been a controversial issue with several school districts.
In Killingly, the local high school reinstated its Redmen moniker last year after rebranding as the Red Hawks.
