Additional charges filed against teen in fatal police crash

Hartford, Conn./WTIC Radio - A Hartford teenager accused of striking a city police vehicle with his car, killing one officer and seriously injuring another, is facing new charges.

State Police are charging Richard Barrington, 18, with first degree manslaughter and assault.

Investigators say Barrington fled a traffic stop on Broad Street September 6th and ran two red lights before colliding with the police vehicle on Asylum Avenue.

Killed was Detective Bobby Garten.

Officer Brian Kearney was injured and is now recovering at home.

Initially, Barrington was charged by Hartford police with failure to obey a traffic signal, misuse of plates, interfering and other offenses.

In addition to the manslaughter and assault charges filed by the state, Barrington is also accused of reckless endangerment, disobeying the direction of an officer resulting in death, driving under the influence, and reckless driving.

Bond was set at $1 million.
