NORWICH, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - All Norwich Public Schools are closed on Friday, January 14, 2022, due to staff shortages.
Superintendent Kristen Stringfellow says 133 staff members have already called in absent, with more absences expected by time school begins in the morning. Only 40 people are available to cover the vacancies.
As of 11 p.m. Thursday night, all absences included: 3 nurses; 4 assistant principals; 1 principal; 56 teachers; 33 para-professionals; 6 registered behavior technicians; 1 BCBA; 5 social workers; 1 psychologist; and 2 school counselors.
In a written statement, Superintendent Springfellow says it wouldn't be safe for students and staff to hold school, despite efforts in the last two weeks to cover mass staff absences.
The day will have to be made up in June. Superintendent Springfellow says she cannot schedule a remote learning day without the Governor's approval.
