The department said it received a complaint on February 22, after which its Animal Control Unit met with the owner of the animals to assess and resolve the situation.

Department officials said there were 99 sheep and a goose that were transported to a rehabilitation facility in Niantic.

In addition, 15 cats were voluntarily surrendered.

Officials say the animals were in various states of distress, including some sheep with overgrown hooves and excess wool growth that caused skin conditions and bald patches.

One ewe and her lamb were taken to a veterinarian for critical treatment, according to the department.

A search and seizure warrant was executed following the citizen complaint regarding the welfare of the animals.
