New Haven, Conn./WTIC Radio - Bird flu has turned up in a backyard flock in New Haven County.

The state Department of Agriculture announced on Friday it's the second detection of the H5N1 virus in domestic birds this year in the state.

State officials last week revealed that the virus was detected in a backyard flock in New London County.

They say the premises have been quarantined and the affected birds euthanized.

While the virus is contagious, health officials say the risk to humans is low and there've been no human cases reported in Connecticut thus far.

Poultry owners are advised to, among other things, keep wild birds and rodents out of poultry houses and coops, and also wash hands and disinfect boots before and after entering the poultry area.

It's also advised to report sick domestic birds, or any groups of wild birds found dead to the state veterinarian.
