WESTPORT, Conn. (WTIC Radio)_ Westport Police say a suspect is arrested in connection with the attempted armed robbery of a couple on a bridge.
The robbery happened on the Ruth Cohen Steinkraus Post Road Bridge around 11:14 a.m.
Authorities say James Cummings, 41, of Bridgeport, approached a man and a woman from behind as they walked on the bridge. Cummings allegedly ordered the couple to lead him to their car, while displaying a knife and threatening the woman.
The woman ran across Post Road while eluding cars, to escape Cummings. Her husband followed.
The couple told police Cummings fled towards Jesup Road.
Police searched the area and arrested Cummings, who had a knife on his person, according to police. The couple identified him as the suspect.
No one was injured during the incident.
Cummings is being held on a $250,000 bond. He is charged with first-degree attempt to commit robbery, third-degree attempt to commit larceny, carrying a dangerous weapon, and second-degree threatening.
Cummings had been out on bond at the time of this incident, stemming from an arrest that occurred on September 5. He was charged with two counts of fourth-degree sexual assault, second-degree threatening, third-degree attempt to commit assault, and second-degree reckless endangerment.
“I am extremely proud of all the officers who assisted with this incident. The high level of skill and teamwork they exhibited led to the quick apprehension of the suspect. Additionally, I would like to extend my gratitude to the Westport Fire Department for their assistance," said Westport Police Chief Foti Koskinas in a written statement.
