Hartford, Conn./WTIC Radio - Governor Lamont is announcing a contract agreement between direct care workers and operators of nursing and group homes.

SEIU Local 1199 will see significant wage increases, according to Lamont.

To that end, the union has withdrawn its strike threat.

“The workers in our nursing homes and group homes provide critical support and care to our most vulnerable residents, and in doing so, deserve salaries that reflect their dedicated work,” Governor Lamont said.

Johannah Alabi, a CNA who took part in the talks, says they're pleased they've averted a potential strike.

She said “The last thing we wanted to do was go on strike - we’d rather remain with our residents who need us."

Under the agreement, there will be incremental increaseas in Medicaid for nursing and group homes over the next three years.

It also creates a pathway to a $26 an hour wage by 2028.
