Hartford, Conn./WTIC Radio - The chancellor of the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities system will be leaving his position effective July 1st.

Terrence Cheng will transition to the role of "Strategic Advisor to the Board."

An interim chancellor will be named by the Board of Regents for Higher Education.

Cheng had come under fire for his lavish spending and abuse of a state credit card during his tenure.

In a statement, Regents Chair Marty Guay said “I thank Chancellor Cheng for his hard work, partnership, and dedication to the system. The future is bright for CSCU as we look to set a new direction for the system.”

During Cheng's time at the helm, CSCU saw a 4.4% increase in total student enrollment.

In a statement, Cheng said “It has been a true honor to serve as Chancellor of the CSCU system and its 65,000 students. I am incredibly proud of the work we have done to eliminate barriers to higher education, and increase educational access, equity, and opportunity for students, particularly for first-generation and minoritized students."
