HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - The State of Connecticut is considering the acquisition of three hospitals that would fall under the UConn Health umbrella, if approved.
The three hospitals are Waterbury Hospital, Bristol Hospital, and Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam.
It could be a particular breath of fresh air for Waterbury Hospital, as one lawmaker says "...this potential acquisition would provide a better environment to help fight the state's health care workforce shortages for nurses, physicians and especially specialty physicians, benefitting care not only in these individual hospitals but in Connecticut at large," according to Democratic State Senator Saud Anwar of South Windsor.
Waterbury Hospital's owner, Prospect Medical Holdings, filed for bankruptcy in January. Prospect also owns Manchester Memorial and Rockville General Hospitals, which aren't part of this particular proposed transaction.
State officials and UConn Health aren't officially commenting further.
